In this beginner friendly workshop, we will be creating shallow bowls and vases for the purpose of housing either built-in or store bought floral "frogs." Frogs are spiked "pucks" that allow floral and greenery stems to freely stand, allowing a more sculptural look. This style and way of arranging is traditionally referred to as Ikebana. Its origins are rooted in Japan. Ikebana, also known as kado, or the “way of flowers,” is a traditional Japanese art form that involves the arrangement of flowers and other natural materials in a stylized manner. The philosophy behind ikebana is grounded in Japanese aesthetics, which emphasizes simplicity, understated elegance, and a respect for nature. Ikebana is not simply about arranging flowers, but creating a harmonious relationship between the natural materials used in the arrangement and the space around them.

In this workshop, we will be creating the ceramic vessel for your natural arrangements. We will not be learning to arrange the flowers, but I will go over some tips and tricks I have learned over the years.

Students will be working with colored porcelain and using slap techniques and a variety of templates to create their vases. The vases will be glazed clear by the RECC staff and should be ready for pickup on 2-3 weeks. You will receive an email when your piece is ready!
